Aphanes pentamera, a herb - removal from extinct species list

01 Dec 2017

The NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee, established under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 (the Act), has made a Final Determination to remove the herb Aphanes pentamera Rothm. from the Schedules of the Act by omitting reference to this species from Part 1 of Schedule 3 (Extinct species). The omission of species from the Schedules is provided for by Part 4 of the Act.

NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee - final determination

The NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee has found that:

1. Aphanes pentamera Rothm. (family Rosaceae) was considered to be restricted to Victoria (Willis 1972) and is listed as an extinct species in New South Wales under the Act.

2. Aphanes pentamera is considered to be a synonym of the widespread  A. australiana (Rothm.) Rothm. (Jeanes and Jobson 1996; APC 2016, PlantNET 2016, VicFlora 2016).

3. Aphanes pentamera has been removed from the list of threatened species in the  Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

4. In view of the above, the NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee is of the opinion that Aphanes pentamera Rothm. is no longer eligible to be listed as an Extinct species in Part 1 of Schedule 3 of the Act.
