Seabirds to Seascapes Seal Survey 2024

A drone survey of seal populations along the NSW coastline.

In August 2024, we conducted the first Seabirds to Seascapes Seal Survey at Barrenjoey Headland, Palm Beach. This was the start of a series of drone surveys at various sites where seals breed and rest along the NSW coastline. The survey sites include:

  • Barrenjoey Headland
  • Montague Island
  • Seal Rocks Nature Reserve
  • Cabbage Tree Island
  • Martin Islet
  • Drum and Drumsticks
  • Steamers Head

The surveys aim to assess the populations of the Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) and New Zealand fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri). The data gathered will inform critical marine conservation initiatives in New South Wales. It will also help us address gaps in knowledge that are essential for reducing risks associated with human-seal interactions.

Seal spotting

You can also take part in seal conservation efforts as a citizen scientist. The Haul-Out, Call-Out initiative is a platform for seal spotting along the NSW coastline. You can report your seal sightings and help us collect important data. This will help us better understand how to minimise negative interactions between humans and seals.

Acknowledgements

We thank the staff from Seabirds to Seascapes partner organisations , including NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and Taronga Conservation Society Australia. Their participation, dedication and expertise in this inaugural seal survey were invaluable in conducting this survey.
