The types of scientific, education and conservation activities that require a scientific licence can include research investigations, surveys conducted by volunteer organisations, biodiversity surveys, bush regeneration and seed collection, bird and bat banding, animal and plant translocations, captive breeding programs, and holding animals for educational purposes.

The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment – Environment, Energy and Science is responsible for the administration of scientific licences, and to assess and mitigate the likely impacts of any proposed actions on conservation values.
