West Head Lookout safety improvements: update August 2023

Read about West Head Lookout works progress, site management and access.

Improvements and construction

Safety improvements to West Head Lookout are on track for completion in mid-November 2023. The reconstruction of the outer sandstone retaining wall around the eastern viewing area is almost complete, with the new garden bed and seating wall to follow.

Sandstone from the old lookout wall has been salvaged in the new retaining wall to maintain the natural design aesthetic.

Protection measures are in place within the work site to prevent damage to the original sandstone flagging. Tree protection zones have also been established.

The designer of the original lookout, Mr Bruce Mackenzie, has also visited the site and the National Parks and Wildlife Service is grateful for his ongoing involvement and advice.

Site management and access

Access to West Head Lookout and the West Head Army Track remains closed to visitors with a road closure on West Head Road at the Resolute Picnic Area.

Access to Resolute Picnic Area, Resolute Track, Aboriginal Heritage Walk, Red Hands Track, West Head Beach, Resolute Beach and Mackerel Beach remain open.
