Rehome a Kosciuszko wild horse

Wild horses are available for rehoming from Kosciuszko National Park.

The program contributes to meeting the population reduction requirements of the Kosciuszko National Park Wild Horse Heritage Management Plan.

Rehoming eligibility and application process

Only individuals or groups approved by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be eligible to receive wild horses through the program.

To apply to become registered as an approved rehomer:

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will not process incomplete applications.

If you are approved as a registered rehomer:

  • You can submit a request for horses using the request form. Horses will be offered to registered rehomers when available.
  • If you receive horses through the program, you will be required to complete an annual program return.
  • Approval is valid for a maximum of 12 months. After this time, a rehomer must complete a new application.

All previously approved rehoming individuals and organisations must complete a new application form.

Wild Horse Rehoming Program review

In late April 2024, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water commissioned an independent expert review of its Wild Horse Rehoming Program following media commentary regarding potential misadministration of the program in Kosciusko National Park.

The report was received on 18 June 2024 and contains 4 key recommendations. The department accepts all recommendations in principle and the revised rehoming guidelines and application form align with these recommendations.

The report is available, redacted to preserve the privacy of the department's staff.
