Acacia bakeri (a tree) - vulnerable species listing

24 Nov 2000

The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act, has made a Final Determination to list the tree Acacia bakeri Maiden as a VULNERABLE SPECIES on Schedule 2 of the Act. Listing of vulnerable species is provided for by Part 2 of the Act.

NSW Scientific Committee - final determination

The Scientific Committee has found that:

1. Acacia bakeri Maiden is described [by Morrison, D.A. & Davies, S.J. (1991) in Harden, G. (ed). Flora of New South Wales. UNSW Press. Vol.2. p.361] as: "Erect or spreading tree, 5-40 m high; bark finely fissured or sometimes smooth; branchlets more or less terete. Phyllodes straight or subfalcate, 5-10 cm long, 15-50 mm wide, 3-4 longitudinal veins prominent, lateral veins conspicuous, apex subacute; 1 gland near base; pulvinus

2. Acacia bakeri has a restricted distribution in north-east New South Wales and south-east Queensland. Specimens have been collected from Mt Banks (in the Blue Mountains) and Yennora which may be the result of escape from cultivation.

3. Most surviving plants occur on private land. Some plants also occur in Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve and Mooball and Mt Jerusalem National Parks.

4. Acacia bakeri is one of the few rainforest acacias. Rainforest in lowland north-east New South Wales has been extensively cleared and remaining habitat for  Acacia bakeri is fragmented. Other threats include weed invasion and visitor impacts.

5. Given the restricted geographical and ecological distribution of Acacia bakeri, the past clearing of habitat and ongoing threats of further clearing and disturbance, the Scientific Committee is of the opinion that the species is likely to become endangered unless the circumstances and factors threatening its survival or evolutionary development cease to operate.
