Squirrel glider population (Petaurus norfolcensis) Barrenjoey Peninsula - endangered population listing
The Scientific Committee established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act, has made a Final Determination to list the Pittwater population of the Squirrel Glider, Petaurus norfolcensis on the Barrenjoey Peninsula, north of Bushrangers Hill as an ENDANGERED POPULATION on Part 2 of Schedule 1 of the Threatened Species Conservation Act.
Listing of endangered populations is allowed for by Section 11 of the Threatened Species Conservation Act.
Petaurus norfolcensis is a species included under Schedule 2 of the Threatened Species Conservation Act, and is a Vulnerable Species State wide.
The Scientific Committee has considered all submissions received following advertisement of the Preliminary Determination.
NSW Scientific Committee - final determination
The Scientific Committee has found that:
1. There are reliable recent records of the occurrence of a population of Petaurus norfolcensis in Pittwater.
2. The forest habitat of Petaurus norfolcensis in Pittwater has been drastically reduced, declining from c.705 hectares in 1946 to c.l25 hectares in 1989.
3. The population is threatened by predation by feral and domestic animals.
4. That in consequence of 2 and 3 the population is in immediate danger of extinction.
5. The population is of significant conservation value as it is disjunct from other known populations and is the only known population in the northern Sydney Metropolitan Region.
