Acacia prominens (Gosford wattle) population, Hurstville and Kogarah Local Government Areas - endangered population listing

02 Oct 1998

The Scientific Committee established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act has made a Final Determination to list the population of the Gosford Wattle Acacia prominens Cunn. ex Don in the Hurstville and Kogarah Local Government Areas as an ENDANGERED POPULATION on Schedule 1 Part 2 of the Threatened Species Conservation Act. Listing of endangered populations is provided for by Part 2 of the Act.

NSW Scientific Committee - final determination

The Scientific Committee has found that:

1. Acacia prominens Cunn. ex Don, the Gosford Wattle, is an erect to spreading tree, 4 - 18 m tall found chiefly from the Hunter Valley to Sydney.  Acacia prominens is not listed on Schedule 1 of the Act, so that populations are eligible for listing.

2. An isolated population of Acacia prominens occurs in Hurstville and Kogarah Local Government Areas, disjunct from other populations and at the southern limit of the range of the species. There are records for the species being here in the nineteenth century.

3. Little bushland survives in the Hurstville/Kogarah area, and the Acacia prominens occurs as isolated or small groups of trees.

4. All the plants occur in locations where they are liable to suffer damage during site maintenance (including the use of herbicide sprays) or development and competition from weeds.

5. In view of 2, 3, and 4 above the Scientific Committee is of the opinion that the Hurstville/Kogarah population of Acacia prominens meets the criteria of Section 11 of the Threatened Species Conservation Act for listing as an endangered population. The population has been reduced to such a critical level and its habitat has been so drastically reduced that it is in immediate danger of extinction. The population is also disjunct from other populations and near the limit of the geographic range of the species and is of significant conservation value as a remnant of part of the original shale flora of Hurstville/Kogarah.
