Final determinations

The lists of threatened species, populations, ecological communities and key threatening processes in the Schedules of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 are updated when a final determination is published on the NSW Legislation website.

The NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee also publishes a notice of final determination. This notice explains how a species, population, ecological community or key threatening process meets the criteria for listing.

Final determinations made before August 2017 were made under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995. Under that Act, assessments were made on the threat status of species, populations or ecological communities in New South Wales and were based on criteria in the Threatened Species Conservation Regulations.

Final determinations made since August 2017 are made under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and the listing criteria in the Biodiversity Conservation Regulation 2017. The conservation assessment reports included with many final determinations are prepared using the common assessment method (CAM).

The schedules of the Act are maintained by the Scientific Committee. They are updated regularly to take into account final determinations that:

  • add or remove species, ecological communities and key threatening processes
  • amend the names or descriptions of species or ecological communities.

Note: Not all species listed in the Schedules of the Act have a final determination. Only those species that have been listed or reviewed by the Scientific Committee since 1996 have a final determination and are included in this database.

Bioregions referenced in determinations

In determining the bioregions where an ecological community occurs, the Committee uses the Biogeographic Regionalisation of Australia. The Committee’s determinations indicate which version has been referenced for a particular ecological community.

As a guide, the Committee has used the following versions.

Version 4 – Determinations made before March 2013

The Committee used Thackway R, Cresswell ID (1995) An interim biogeographic regionalisation for Australia: a framework for setting priorities in the National Reserve System Cooperative Program. (Version 4.0. ANCA: Canberra).

Version 7 – Determinations made since March 2013

The Committee currently uses SEWPaC (2012) Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia, Version 7. Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities.
