The Flood Prone Land Policy aims to make the community more flood resilient. It accomplishes this by reducing the impacts of flooding on owners and occupiers of flood-prone property and reducing public and private losses. The policy recognises that flood-prone land is a valuable resource.
The Flood risk management manual supports the policy and guides councils on managing flood risk to their communities through the flood risk management framework. This includes helping councils develop and implement flood risk management plans for their communities. The manual also outlines the technical assistance provided to councils by the NSW Government.
The manual was gazetted in June 2023 as the manual relating to the development of flood-liable land for the purposes of section 733 of the Local Government Act 1993. It replaced the Floodplain development manual (2005).
A series of flood risk management guidelines support the manual.
