Environmental health

The science, evidence and knowledge we generate helps to protect human and environmental health, as well as support environmental regulation research.

Our work helps to restore and enable better human and environmental health. We also support our partners in the development and implementation of environmental regulation.

Our scientists:

  • manage the air quality monitoring network and provide hourly updates for air quality across New South Wales
  • conduct risk assessments for contamination and monitor chemicals in the environment
  • provide evidence-based advice to support the NSW Environment Protection Authority in their pollution-related investigations, regulation, emergency responses, prosecutions and issues of community concern
  • help manage and monitor the environmental impact of pollution on land, beaches and waterways
  • assess and advise on the impacts of natural hazards including flooding and bushfires.

Case study

Our scientists have successfully tested a new sampling approach that rapidly identifies rogue pesticides and chemical ‘hot spots’ in our environment....
Two people wading into water, in Arrawarra Creek near Coffs Harbour, one holds a passive sampler to install.
